From bilbies to starry night skies, historic pubs to WWII connections, Charleville in Queenslands South-West is more than a stopover destination on the Outback Queensland road trip. 1. Charleville Cosmos Centre and Observatory
Have you seen the outback wonders of the night sky? Without the light pollution of a big city, the starry night skies in Outback Queensland are truly something that need to been seen to be believed.
Each night Charleville’s Cosmos Centre and Observatory rolls open its roof, revealing binary stars, clusters and planets. Come and enjoy the passionate guides, experience the night sky as our ancestors did and learn about objects that have plummeted from the skies to land here in the Outback Queensland.
2. WWII Tour
Follow a guide to find out what the Top Secret WWII Tour is all about. See what remains on site and discover why the USAAF were here, all 3,500 of them. Insider tip: Bookings are essential via the Visitor Information Centre.
3. Hotel Corones
Take a stroll through the town centre with its historic architecture and experience the famous Hotel Corones. Step back in time at Hotel Corones, well know as one of the iconic hotels in the heart of Outback Queensland. The history of this hotel goes back to its construction from 1924-29. Just the place to enjoy a few cold beers after a round of golf.
4. Royal Flying Doctors Service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre provides you with an incredible insight into the outback service which still operates today.
Medical supplies and radio equipment has changed dramatically over the years and throughout it all the Flying Doctor always made it through. The long history of the medical service to remote outback communities is explained in an introductory film. Enjoy displays of past and present equipment and medical kits. Absorb information that will take you through the journey from the humble beginnings of the Royal Flying Doctor Service through to the present day operations of this vital service to outback communities.
5. Visit the Bilbies
The bilbies are back!
After the long snooze of 2020, due to the global pandemic, the bilbies are ready to welcome you to Charleville. See the super cute bilbies up close and personal in their spectacular nocturnal house, learn about the plight of the bilby and the successful breeding and release program.
